 THE REEL THING                                                                                  February 1992

Well what do you know!

It's only a month until Spring

And we certainly know

What delights that will bring.

                 No more driveways to shovel,

Or heavy clothes to wear.

You can away those starter cables

And the roads'll soon be bare.

So it's time to start thinkin' fishin'

And I don't mean drilling holes in the ice.

We've almost had our fill of that pastime.

Casting in open water will sure be nice.

The trout in the streams will be waiting

To see if our casting's improved.

They'll be studying our flies and our fly tying.

Let's hope that big one will be moved.

If you haven't been to the gym and practicing

Maybe it's time that you came out.

Cause there's not too many nights left

To sharpen your style,

After all, that's what we're all about!

                                    ****

Sorry about the above, but some times I just can't help myself and the stuff just comes out of my fingers as I sit down to wack out the Reel Thing.

Anyhow, Sheila and I and all the regulars would like to thank everybody in our club for the wonderful enthusiasm that has been on display all winter this year.  We have had consistently better attendance, right from our opening night last September and it appears that this will continue to be the norm right through the spring and summer months too, after we move outside to our pool.

The payoff is obvious when you look at the results of all the efforts put in by our casters, fly tyers, anglers and so on.  We have high hopes that this will be the year that the competitive urge will take off in the S.F.& B.C.A., with a big increase in the number of casters (both bait and fly) who partake in the actual competitions.....especially, the Scarborough Championships on the 6th and 7th of June and the Canadian Championships on the following weekend.  I would love to take a team from our club to the North American Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky in August.  We have enough talent in our club, now, to shake up a few people and even surprise ourselves.

Those of you who missed out on the great (free) weekend at Steve Ryder's in-law's cottage on Lake Scugog missed out on a real treat.  Great hospitality, easy to get to, lot's of snow and fine fishin'!  Leading the parade in the catchin' department were Paulo with a lovely four pounder and Steve (our host, yet) with a 27 inch, six pounder.  There were a half a dozen others caught by us lesser lights.  There have been a number of ice fishin' excursions to Haliburton since it opened on New Year's Day with some nice catches of rainbows and speckles by Scott Purcell, Dave Collins and yours truly, but the big fishin' news is John Alexander's decimation of the trout in Harcourt Park.  Fishing right in front of his cottage and in some of the surrounding lakes, John has managed to keep his frying pan full all winter and has probably put more trout back into the swim than the rest of us have caught in total.

The Sportsman's Show is fast approaching and we will probably (if we are invited) have a number of our casters competing again this year.  If you are interested in giving it a go, please get back to me or Scott Purcell.

*** The deadline for booking your space on our annual ice-out trip to Windermere Lodge and A/B Lake is fast approaching.  This is the big one....the best trip of the year....$110.00....all-inclusive!  Remember, it's the first eight to get their money (or deposits) in who will be the lucky ones.  Don't put it off, or you may miss out!

Our itinerary has been working out quite nicely, but there are a couple of school closings to make a note of on your calendar ..... March 2nd, and I believe, March 16th. (Please check with me on this one)

I have heard that several of our members are looking into getting new cars, now that interest rates have pretty well bottomed out.  PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO GIVE OUR SPONSOR, DON JOHNSON CHEV-OLDS A LOOK-SEE.  I can't guarantee that they will give you a better break just because you're a club member, but I can guarantee that they will match anything else you can find out there and at the same time, offer you superior service.  Don't forget to tell them that you belong to the S.F.& B.C.A. (the club sponsored by DON JOHNSON CHEV-OLDS)
