 THE REEL THING                                                                                June 1991

We would like to wish a big welcome aboard to our two newest members, Petra and John Radford.  John's obvious enthusiasm for the club suggest that he and Petra will not only reap much satisfaction from our various activities, but will inject their new club with a shot of John's own humour and bubbly energy.

There is not much to report in terms of fishing results from everybody.  I guess, either most of our fishermen don't enjoy bragging about their success - or - they don't want to give away too many secrets.  However, I can tell you that Paulo, Ana, Dave and Ela had a fine weekend up at Pigeon Lake, bagging several feeds of pickerel, a few large bass and a big musky that Paulo released after a terrific tussel.  He swears it "Was this long ............ ................................................................!"

Tom and Pat Henderson have been placing well up in the standings in the various pickerel tournaments that they have been participating in but have yet to match their winning ways of last year.  The Ganaraska River has been extremely productive for a few of us over the past several weeks.  John Alexander, Rod Sills, Jim Lee and myself have caught several hundred brown trout, along with a number of rainbows.  Before anybody gets too upset, I said "Caught" and not necessarily "Kept".  The browns ranged from 9" to over 18", while the rainbows tipped the scales up to 16 pounds.

As everybody knows by now the Scarborough Fly and Bait Casting Association has a new sponsor, Bob Johnson Chev-Olds, a a community concious G.M. dealer on Kingston Road in Westhill.  Not only are they sponsoring our club, but it appears that they wish to take a participatory role in some of our activities.  Several Bob Johnson men were extremely helpful in the Scarborough Fly and Bait Casting Championships a couple of weeks ago.  Thanks, once again to our new sponsor and the fellows that helped out, as well.  We look forward to seeing some more of the Bob Johnson anglers out at our Monday evening sessions at the pool.

Our sixth annual championship tournament was quite successful with nineteen participants in all, ranging in age from under 5, to over 60.  As usual, the novice or "B" class, as it is commonly known, drew the largest entry and the awards were well distributed.  Leon Schwartz took the All-Round fly title with first, second and third place finishes.  He just managed to finish ahead of Jim Lee, who won the trout fly and Peter Durnford who took the bass bug title.  An excellent round of dry fly was also posted by John Alexander in his first tournament, when he finished second by 2 strokes to Leon in dry fly with a fine score of 90.  In the plug casting events it was the Collins family, all the way!  Ela had 2 silvers and a gold to capture the All-Round Ladies title, while David, with a silver and a bronze to go with his gold in 1/4 ounce, took the men's All-Round Plug Accuracy title.  Meanwhile, Paulo Conceicao took the gold in 3/8th and Bill Milne, the gold in 5/8th.  Tracy Beck had 2 golds and a silver to finish ahead of Sheila and second to Ela on the distaff side.  Matthew Milne added to his medal collection with golds in all three junior plug accuracy events.  Matthew's sister, Stephanie, Kyle Durnford and Matt Ross pushed him to his All-Round Junior title with fine efforts of their own.

In the "A" class events, Harvey Beck and I shared the golds between us for the twelve accuracy and distance events with Harvey taking 7, and I, capturing 5.  North Jory, despite not having one of his better days, shot a fine 94 in 5/8th, tying Beck, but lost out on the cast-off.  He also had an excellent round of 96 in 3/8th, but finished third behind Beck and myself with 98 and 97 respectively.  I was lucky enough to win the All-Round Fly Accuracy and All-Round Plug Distance Championships, while Beck took the Accuracy Plugs and Distance Flies.  His efforts were also good enough to give him the overall 1991 Bob Johnson Scarborough Open title.

Jim Lee, for his super job in keeping things moving and coordinated all weekend, while still managing a first place finish himself in trout fly accuracy, was given the good sportsmanship award, a beautiful Scandinavian sheath knife.  It has been suggested in some quarters that we give some consideration to awarding the opposite, a 'booby prize for poor sportsmanship' in future tournaments, but this idea was quickly dismissed as inappropriate.  Thanks to the generosity of Normark's Roger Cannon,  Sam's Sports and Direct Factory Sales, merchandise prizes were awarded to all those who competed in the "B" Class events.

We still have a few members that we haven't seen out at our Monday evening sessions at the pool.  Come on out guys and gals, if only to swap fishin' tales with the rest of us.  Unbelieveably, we still have a couple members who haven't paid their 1991 club dues!!

The Miramichi trip is now all set with Scott Purcell, Jim Lee, Rod Sills, Paulo Conceicao, John Alexander, Leon Schwartz joining Sheila and me for this fantastic outing.  We will be participating in a variety of angling workshops over the four or five days of the Miramichi Festival, while getting in some memoreable fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon at the same time.  I am sure Fred Bigioni would have been part of this venture if his son had not been involved in a frightening auto accident.  Although Andrew was badly injured and will be laid up for several months yet, he is progressing quite nicely and things are slowly getting back to normal in the Bigioni household.  We all have missed you, Fred, and we understand your obvious priorities, but we look forward to seeing you on the casting platform once again before too long.  Let's hear about some of those fishing results, eh gang, so that we can all enjoy reading about your good luck, or even about those 'almost' days!
