 THE REEL THING                                                                                March 1989

Welcome to our newest members Chris, Mark, Nels, Wali, and Doug, along with their respective families.  They all bring a little extra spark and enthusiasm to our club.

The Radio Station C.J.C.L. contest is well underway and as usual, a few of our members have done a great deal of work to try and raise a little extras funding for our club and its activities.  Many thanks to Irene, Rod, Ian, Sheila and the others who have pitched in so far.  There is not much time left, so how about everybody making a big push to collect as many of those valuable receipts as possible!

It won't be too long before the last of the snow is off the ground and we move to our outdoor headquarters at the Scarborough City Hall Pool.  It's been a great winter for all our casters.  This year we placed the onus on instruction and practice, while minimizing the competitive aspect of our program.  Those casters with a competitive bent in their systems will be getting a chance to display their talents at the up-cming Sportsmen's Show and I know that we will once again collect our share of the awards.  Good luck to Rod, Alan, Paul, Steve, Debbie, John, Sheila, Jack, Rick and Fred.  They form the team that will represent our club at this annual event this year.

Special congratulations are in order for Rick Madden, Fred Bigioni and Rod Noble who undertook to build, right from the raw bamboo, their own fly rods.  They began the project late in the fall and each of them will have the finished product of their labours ready to test out on the streams in a week or two.  We have already had a test run, casting with Rick's, and it's a thing of beauty and threw a line effortlessly with a sweet feeling that only the finest of split cane can produce.

Our fly tying classes were held up somewhat and didn't get underway until a few weeks ago but it is nice to see a number of new faces giving this fine old art a try and turning out flies of their own.  Thanks to the superb efforts of George McConnachie, we have been able to utilize the lovely supply of fly tying materials that were gifted to us last fall.  He has put a lot of work in to organizing, and separating the supplies in a large workable cabinet for us to use.

Special thanks are also due here to those members who have pitched in to help with casting instruction.  With new members constantly arriving on the scene, it is difficult to give everybody the amount of personal attention that we would like.  So it is essential that those members who have learned the basic fundamentals of fly and bait casting from the rest of us, pass on their knowledge to our visitors and newer members.  Thank you Leon, Debbie, Rick, Fred, Ron, Sheila and anybody else who I might have missed.

Ian Hay has once again offered to be our equipment manager for this year but it is imperative that somebody else volunteers to give him a hand with this job.  The chores involve looking after our targets, rods, reels, lines, leaders and so on.  We shouldn't expect Ian to have to assume the entire burden himself.  If you are interested and can give a few moments of your time, please let me know as soon as possible.

Our Scarborough Fly and Bait Casting Open Annual Championships are once again scheduled and registered with the American Casting Association.  The dates this year are Saturday and Sunday, June 3rd and 4th.  There will be six accuracy events on the Saturday, with six distance events being held on the Sunday.  If possible please mark and reserve this weekend on your calendar, if not to try your hand in the competition, then at least to give us a hand with running the show.  You will see some unbelievable casting that weekend, with perfect scores likely and distances well in excess of '400 in plug casting and '200 in fly casting.  There will be awards in both "A" class as well as in "B" class, with categories broken down to Ladies, Juniors and Men.  Trophies and merchandise will be awarded.  If we can get two or three people to step forward and volunteer their services to look after the organization, then we will have a party, barbecue, or whatever in conjunction with the Championships.

There are three scheduled club trips on the agenda and they are all on a first-come, first-served basis.  For more information please call either Sheila or myself as soon as possible.

We have been sending out the 'Reel Thing' to members, whether their dues have been up to date, or not.  Unfortunately we will have to cease this practice, so if you would like to continue receiving our bulletin, the 'Reel Thing', then PLEASE send us a cheque to cover your dues for 1989.  Even if you are only able to come and share the odd evening with the rest of us or wet a line with some of your old buddies, it is a very small price to pay for that privilege.  We look forward to hearing from you.  The dues have not increased -they are still Junior - $20, Individual - $25 and Family $35.

That's all for now, folks!
