 THE REEL THING                                                                                March 1991

The Scarborough Fly & Bait Casting Association is pleased to announce the arrival of two of our newest members, Carol Conceicao and Scott Purcell.  Scott came on board just in time to claim the last spot on our spring fishing trip next month to A/B Lake. With only one night of instruction in fly casting at the gym, he showed enough courage to get up on the platform at the Sportsmen's Show and compete in the dry fly accuracy.  Although not particularly pleased with the resulting score, he now has the incentive and a goal to strive for in succeeding tournaments.  Furthermore, Scott and our other novice casters who gave it their best shot at the show should realize that the folks in the crowd watching them cast couldn't do nearly as well, even if they had the guts to get up on the platform in front of everybody else.

Carol Conceicao's arrival was quite another matter.  Ana and Paulo Conceicao spent a grueling week or so with many false alarms while awaiting the arrival of their first child.  Nevertheless, Paulo managed to take a couple of hours off from his vigil to cast at the show on the first Saturday.  He tied for first place in the 1/4oz "B" Spinning Accuracy with a couple of casters with over 20 years experience between them, then soundly beat them in a cast-off to claim first place for himself and our club.  Not bad for a guy who just started a year ago and with a lot more important business on his mindthan casting.  A week later Paulo was going to attempt to repeat his success in the 3/8 event, but was thwarted at the last minute by the arrival of his daughter, Carol.  Everybody is well and there will be many more days for Paulo to add to his collection of trophies.

Congratulations to all those who competed at the Sportsmen's Show on behalf of our club.  A super job was done by all of you and was greatly appreciated by yours truly and all the others in The S.F.& B.C.A. who, for one reason or another, were unable to join in on the fun.  The kind of support we received by this turnout was what our association thrives on and makes all the work that goes on behind the scenes worthwile!  Special kudos to the casters who represented us at the Sportsmen's Show so marvellously: Ela Collins, Dave Collins, John Alexander, Leon Schwartz, Jim Lee, Rick Madden, Kim Potvin, Scott Purcell, Paulo Conceicao, Matt Ross, North Jory and of course, my lovely wife (we made it official on March 2) Sheila.

A few of the highlites from the show:  Paulo's father visiting from Portugal and not able to understand a word of English or really comprehend what was going on; when he saw his son receiving the first place trophy along with all the aplause, burst into tears of appreciation for his son's achievement,  Kim Potvin practically being pushed into the dry fly event despite only a few evening's work at the gym, then doing a creditable job of fly casting, Jim Lee performing with great elan in his stint, to capture 4th place in his event, Ela & Dave Collins doing a remarkable job in the plug events, despite Ela's also being well along the way in the baby derby, John Alexander, despite a bit of bad luck, finishing his kicks at the kitty in each of his events in fine style and with a smile on his face, Sheila - a personal best total score in her three events, young Matt Ross collecting a first and a second place trophy in his first tournament, North Jory, as usual, adding to his impressive collection of hardware and of course, Leon and all the others who displayed such fine sportsmanship on behalf of our club.

The bamboo rod making is coming along quite nicely, with Jim Lee's and Leon's rapidly approaching completion. John, Peter, Fred, Rick, and Paulo should also have their split cane works of art finished in time for the fishing season.  We are negotiating a bulk purchase of 12' bamboo culms and if anybody contemplates participating in next winter's rod-making classes, they should get in touch with me, or Leon, as soon as possible and commit themselves to purchasing one or two of these culms.  The cost should run about $20.00 each and provide enough material to make 3 or 4 rods, at least.

John Alexander reports that very few of us are taking advantage of the club library.  If you haven't looked into this freebee yet, then you are missing a good bet.

Not much to report in fishing news........as usual though, John Alexander appears to have been top gun once again this winter in the ice fishing for trout category.  Sheila and I enjoyed several fine meals of trout fillets courtesy of John.

The next big event on the club calendar is our annual ice-out trout fishing junket.  Ten of us will head up to Haliburton for a couple of days of Speckled Trout fishing in A/B Lake, and relaxing in Windermere Lodge's giant hot tub.  Those of you unfortunates who missed out on this one should earmark the long Canada Day weekend for our next trip - a camping and fishing trip, also to Haliburton.

The outdoor casting season will be on us before we know it so here is the summer tournament schedule as it sits for now: May 28 (Sr. Olympics, St. Louis), June 1 & 2 (The Scarborough Fish House Restaurant Open), hosted by our club , June 9 (St. Catharines Fish & Game Open), June 15 & 16 (Canadian Open), June 22 & 23 (Great Lakes Championships, Columbus, Ohio), July 27 & 28 (Missouri Valley, St. Louis), August 5 to 10 (North American Nationals, Cincinnati, Ohio).

We are still awaiting final scheduling of the proposed fishing and casting festival in New Brunswick (let's hear from you, Bill!)

ATTENTION: No casting at the gym on Easter Monday (school closure).
