 THE REEL THING                                                                                March 1996

This will be a rather short version of our bulletin as I don't have a great deal to report at this time.  But, before I forget please mark the following dates on your calendar that we won't have access to the gym for our weekly get-togethers:  February 28, March 6th, 13th & 20th.  The reasons for the closures are an opera at the school being performed by the students and secondly, the annual School March Break.  We have had meetings at new member Craig Blundon's home and mine in lieu of the first two and will meet again this week at my place.  We hope that Kip Van Kempen will be able to get ovWWer with the pictures of the great trip he and his wife, Mary, had last summer to Great Bear Lake and the Tree River for giant Trout and Char.  There will probably also be a get-together somewhere or another on the 20th as Sheila and I will be visiting my son in Florida (leaving Toronto on the 20th and returning late on the 27th.) at which time we will be back in the gym.  Hopefully someone  will volunteer to take charge of the gym and equipment for the 27th.

We have had several ice fishing trips to Haliburton so far with typical Brook Trout action, occasionally exciting but also requiring patience.  Craig Blundon lost what was probably a wall-hanger as he had elected to use a huge golden shiner that found its way into our bait bucket.  That fish would have had to be well over twenty inches and at least four or five pounds to attack a seven inch long shiner.  Paul also released a bigun!  Oh well!  All the more for our ice-out trip next month.  It may be on the 20th, but if the weather doesn't soon change will be re-scheduled for the 27th.  The Trout we have taken so far were 2 to 3 pounders - and delicious.  If you haven't registered (with a deposit) for that one yet, you had better look after it soon.  Eight people Maximum!

Craig Blundon and Paul Kennedy are about to start work on their bamboo fly rods.  They are going to have to hustle if they want them finished for May 1.  Robert Voore is just putting the finishing touches on his first split cane effort, a beautiful 4 - 5 weight fly rod.

The one hour special that Henry and Italo (Canadian Sportfishing) put together last summer with Steve Rajeff and me is finished and the first showing on T.S.N.  is scheduled for Thursday, March 21st. at 3:30.  We should have a copy of the video this week.  This show covers stream fishing on  the Ganaraska, Bass fishing on Georgian Bay and the National Casting Championship Tournament we hosted last summer.  It is supposed to illustrate how the skills learned in tournament casting make for more enjoyable and successful fishing as well!  No big fish in this one, unfortunately, but we had a lot of fun doing the show with Steve, Henry and Italo.

It seems strange not to have our guys and gals casting at the Sportsmen's Show this year.  Casting has been part of the show's history since its inception back in 1949.  If you are planning on competing in any of the tournaments this summer, including the National please let me know so that I can explain what's involved and so on. There is only a few hundred dollars worth of Jack Wilking's fishing tackle, outdoor clothing, books and 'stuff' left for sale.  Almost any reasonable offer for the whole works can walk with it.  I'll be happy to get the space back in my  basement that it has occupied.

Hopefully we will have had our election of club officers by the time I put together the next bulletin.  We will inform you of the date for that meeting as soon as it is available and we hope that you will put the evening on a priority  basis.  The future of our club as a viable association of  fishermen who enjoy what we have done, are doing and plan on doing, may depend on the outcome of that evening!

Donald Cox has been one of the most 'involved' anglers in our club.  He is actively involved in The Issaak Walton Club, The Winterhatch Fly Tyers Club, Trout Unlimited and, of course, The Scarborough Fly and Bait Casting Association.  Let's hope that Donald can allocate a weekend, or so, along with a few mornings to actually get out and  wet a line with the rest of us this year.  Another member who would like to be able to spend more time with us in the club's various activities is Paul Quarrington, however, Paul has his finger in many different pies at the moment as his writing career has pushed him into the forefront of his profession.  I know, however, that 'Q' will certainly participating in many of our ventures this spring and summer.  Paul loves fishing and enjoys casting.  One of our most valuable members, Irene Johnston, is back from a lengthy vacation in Florida and should be showing off her well earned tan at the gym for the rest of us shortly.

If you have any tid-bits, fishing or other-wise, that you would like to share with your fellow members please put them down on paper and I promise they will be in the next club bulletin after I receive them.  Bring out a friend or relative the next time that you come to the gym.  They will thank you for it!  Also, if  there is anything you are looking for in equipment - or have to sell - then let us know and we will advertise it for you.  Please let me know if you are interested in looking after things while Sheila and I are away on the 20th and 27th.

* We have a number of things out on loan at this time that I would like returned - or at least a phone call requesting them for a while longer.  These include items such as Books, Casting Targets, Steel Rod-Making Mold, 60 Degree Centre Guage, Other Tools, Rods, Reels, Fly Lines, Club Fly Tying Kit and so on.
