"Racism. Stop It! Action 2000" The Stop Racism Youth Challenge. This in an excellent opportunity for WUSC local Committees to take part in a national Anti-Racism campaign!

Overview-

A National Youth Planning Forum was held in November of 1998, to obtain recommendations for the preparation of the Stop Racism Youth Challenge that will be launched on March 21, 1999. The Stop Racism Youth Challenge is a new anti-racism public awareness project sponsored by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and is part of the on going "Racism. Stop It!" March 21st Campaign.

How the Stop Racism Youth Challenge Works-

The desire of the campaign is to mobilize young people across Canada to take action against racism. Beginning March 21st, 1999, "Teams" of youth across the country will be invited to take on "Challenges" that address the issue of racism.

There are 21 Challenges to choose from, developed using the feedback of the National Youth Planning Forum that was held in November, 1998. A "Team" is a group of 3 to 6 young people aged 15 to 24. In each community, Teams will present their Challenges to locally-formed Steering Committees - one Challenge per Team. One or two of the most outstanding entries will be forwarded to the National Judging Panel. The National Judging Panel will choose 10 outstanding Challenges which will take part in a Youth-to-Youth Exchange Program - an opportunity to travel across the country, displaying or presenting their anti-racism work to other Canadians.

The campaign culminates with a concert and awards event on March 21st, 2000, where the 10 outstanding Challenges will be presented and celebrated.

Getting Involved-

Participating YWCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada will take the lead in developing community Steering Committees, which will organize and facilitate the campaign locally.

The local Steering Committee plays a significant role in the campaign. The Committee will recruit Teams of young people, reach out to the community to ensure that all youth have an opportunity to participate, act as the local judging panel, and choose 1 or 2 outstanding teams to forward to the national judging panel.

Representatives of local universities, community colleges, other NGOs, and other youth organizations are invited to participate in the Local Steering Committee.
