Significant Music Piano Competition

Structure and Procedures

4. Participants must select pieces for competition as outlined in the "Significant Music Competition Catalogue - Themes of Original Music".

5. Notice: There are no on-site competition warm-up opportunities available to performers.

6. Adjudicators' written commentaries will be provided to each performer at the close of the competition.

7. Contestants must perform all pieces from memory as stated in the official entry form.

8. For the purposes of performing at the competition, all repeats must be observed as written.

9. Copies of competition music will be provided by "Significant Music" and will be made available to adjudicators.

10. A piece can not be used in more than one class.

11. Parents, teachers and contestants are not permitted to converse with any adjudicator.

12. Contestants may be asked to play a second time within their class at the request and discretion of an adjudicator.

13. Public recordings and photography of any kind are not permitted at this event.

14. All adjudication decisions are final.

Cash Prize Awards

15. A total of $3,600.00 in prize money will be awarded as follows: ($450 per class - see bottom of page for class description).

1st Place : $300.00

2nd Place : $100.00

3rd Place : $ 50.00

Award of Participation

16. All participants receive a "Performance Appreciation Award" courtesy of City of Toronto and a Police Certificate for "Respect & Integrity in the Community", courtesty of Toronto Police.

17. Age limits will be imposed as indicated (TBA). Classes are as follows:

Group A - For the younger beginner (to age 12)

( Royal Conservatory: recommended Gr. 1 - Gr. 3)

Class 1 : (3 selections)

List A - "The Moody Child : Part 1"

List B - "A Child's Play into Fantasy", ("Little Tin Soldiers Marching")

List C - "The Art of Making Bubbles"

Class 2 : (3 selections)

List A: "Baby's Magical Musical Box"

List B: "Hopscotch"

List C: "King of the Mountain"

Class 3 : (3 selections) - recommended Gr. 4 / Gr. 6 (to age 16)

List A: "Middle of a Perfect Afternoon"

List B: "Curiosity...And the Cat..."

List C: "End to a Perfect Day"

Class 4 : (3 selections) - recommended Gr. 7/8

List A: "Della Quarcia" Arr. E. A. Paola

List B: "Prelude No. 1"

Group C: For the more experienced student (to age 19)

Class 7: Blues/ Jazz/ Latin

(2 selections)

List B: "Danse Aficionado"

Class 8: Ragtime

(2 of 3 selections) - recommended Gr. 8/9 (to age 19)

List A: "Compass Point March" or "Hawkins' Hill Rag"

List B: "Delaporte Waltz"

18. All classes shall be open to AMATEURS ONLY, unless otherwise stated. (An amateur is one whose principal means of livelihood is not obtained from the professional pratice of music, even if renumeration for musical services is accepted from time to time).

19. Any competitor studying with an Adjudicator for this Event, shall not be eligible.

Entries

20. All entries must be postmarked or received no later than May 1, 1996 and accompanied by the appropriate fee(s) as stated on the Official Entry Form". Receipts will not be issued and entry fees are non-refundable.

21. Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted.

22. Contestants may enter as many classes as they qualify and register for.

23. Any entry that does not conform to the rules and regulations stated herein, will be refused.

Appropriate Dress

24. Contestants are reminded that any live performance is also a shared visual experience and that all performers are expected to be dressed appropriately for the competition.
