Pathos & Power Pathos & Power
are in the air when Orchestra Toronto performs three romantic and compelling compositions on the afternoon of Sunday, February 24 The concert begins with Peer Gynt
Suite No. 1, the most popular work by Norway's greatest composer, Edvard Grieg. Its romantic and timeless melodies are part of the incidental music Grieg wrote for the premier of Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name in 1876 in Oslo. Later, in 1888 and 1891, Grieg extracted eight movements to make two four-movement suites — one of them the Suite No. 1 being performed by Orchestra Toronto.
The power and beauty of our northern landscape are celebrated in The Canadian Shield
by John Burge, a composer, music educator and pianist born in Dryden, Ontario. Since 1987 Burge has been a professor of composition and theory at the School of Music at Queen's University in Kingston. The
afternoon ends with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's magnificent masterpiece, his Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Tchaikovsky wrote the symphony in 1877 and 1878, not long after his patroness, Nadezhda von Meck, entered his life.
He completed the work in the aftermath of a catastrophic marriage and told von Meck not only that he wanted to dedicate it to her, but that she would find in it "an echo of your most intimate thoughts and emotions."
The turbulent changes in Tchaikovsky's life led him to push the boundaries of the strict Western form and create new structures to accommodate music that was strongly personal and expressive. His Fourth Symphony
is Tchaikovsky's first composition to serve as a reflection of his life — dramatic, urgent, enormously expressive.
