I Am Not A Giant
An "In Tacit Understanding" Youth Testimonial
by Yana Aranda, Notre Dame High School
Performed April 8/1998 @ Metro Hall
My name is Yana Aranda, and I am here to express, on behalf of students past and present, just what the "In Tacit Understanding" Program has meant to everyone involved.
I are not a Giant, but I took a huge step by becoming involved with the "In Tacit Understanding" Program. No one could have imagined just how much of a success this showcase would become. How were we to know? For who could have predicted that collecting and sharing thoughts on experiences of racism and it's affects would have such an impact? Some of us have searched from within to put our thoughts to paper, to paint, to act, and to make beautiful music in support.
Everyone wants to make a difference, but was this the way to do it? My answer is yes!
All it took, was for me to change the way I see the world, and then to let others know what a difference that change has made. Participating in the "In Tacit Understanding" experience has made me feel like I have made an impression on the world. I didn't sit idly by and just watch, as the struggle of those people who deal with racism each day increased.
Today, I am here on behalf of all "Young Artists For a Dream Street Theatre" who believe that racism is not an issue to be ignored. On behalf of young people who believe that giving up is never an option and that the way to peace and hope is alive in each of us, to encourage each and everyone of you to remember and rediscover your own potential, your strength, and ability to change the lives of others by simply changing the way you see the world.
To alter the course of the future, we need your strength and support - we can not reach our potential by ignoring racism, because if we do, then we too, are the problem, and this is time to be part of the "In Tacit Understanding" solution... for we can not and we will not remain silent any longer on issues of basic Human Rights.
