The Canadian Opera Company's 2012/2013 season opens with the quintessential Italian opera, Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore. Against the backdrop of civil war, troubadour Manrico, his rival Conte di Luna,
and noblewoman Leonora fall victim to an elaborate revenge plot perpetrated by the gypsy Azucena, who reveals her own horrific secret at the jaw-dropping finale of this high-tension thriller. The cast
includes world-renowned tenor Ramón Vargas as Manrico and acclaimed Canadian baritone Russell Braun as Conte di Luna. South-African soprano Elza van den Heever appears as Leonora and Russian mezzo-soprano Elena
Manistina sings the role of fiery Azucena. Celebrated Italian conductor Marco Guidarini leads the COC Orchestra and Chorus through Verdi's dramatic score, featuring one grand hit after another.

This hilarious screwball comedy of revenge, mistaken identity and spouses pushing the boundaries of each other's fidelity features some of opera's most gorgeous dance music. This new COC production by director
Christopher Alden conjures up a glamorous world bubbling with extravagance and sophisticated wit, while gently mocking the duplicity of people and the larger social hypocrisies they inhabit.
COC Music Director Johannes Debus helms the COC Orchestra and Chorus through a score that has come to embody high-spirited celebration since the opera's premiere in 1874.
The cast of largely Canadian voices is led by internationally renowned Canadian tenor Michael Schade.

Series returns for it's fourth season at the 3rd floor Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, which allows for breath-taking views through floor to ceiling glass windows of University Avenue as a backdrop. Includes concerts,
performances and presentations by young artists, Canadian and international opera stars and COC staff.
This is an exciting opportunity for Torontonians to experience the artistic excellence and cultural diversity of the city in the beautiful new Four Seasons Centre For The Performing Arts.
All concerts are free to the public. "Brown bag" lunches are welcome for the noon performances.
