Mission Statement
- Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, One Community Initiative
Brief Background
Since 1986, Significant
Music® has combined music instruction with printing
and
publishing services for a variety of groups and projects. Beginning
in 1995, a number of arts based programs and initiatives aimed at
publicly celebrating positive youth, were designed, developed and
introduced in co-operation with Det. Dino Doria, Toronto Police
(Hate/Crime Unit).
Significant Music® has contributed its Music Library as both a resource and a framework for young students to build, develop and share highly personal experiences of artistic expression in a very public way.
In 1996, two dependent events co-sponsored by Toronto Police and City of Toronto (Access and Equity Unit) were held to inform the public and encourage youth that we can remain silent no longer on issues which compromise dignity, justice, racial harmony and community.
The first event, at Metro Hall, incorporated Dance, Drama, Art, Music and Spoken Word. A second, witnessed young piano students from across Southern Ontario competing for scholarships at Paramount Canada's Wonderland.
In subsequent years, these projects and programs have successfully expanded in forum and in scope. Through existing co-sponsorships, and with the valuable contributions made by volunteers and supporters, the efforts of students have been recognized as they set out to achieve the following program goals:
1. To work together to form a stronger community.
2. To promote dignity for themselves and for others through the elimination of racism.
3. To participate, and celebrate, the many positive initiatives undertaken by today's youth through Music, Art, Dance, Drama, and Spoken Word.
On
February 14, 1998, its "...In Tacit Understanding..." program by
Ennio A. Paola, Music Educator/Composer/Director
of Music, was lauded with a Roy
C. Hill Award from the Canadian
Teachers' Federation, "in recognition of the initiative and
professional enterprise displayed in the development and successful
application of an important educational innovation". Such awards has
caused this program to flourish as a leading, worldwide educational
forum devoted to inform, organize and engage youth in issues of human
rights. Through this arts showcase, a supportive and positive
learning environment is created, in which performers and young
artists develop communication and leadership potential.
Based on an ever changing and evolving musical format, young people produce submissions through effective art, dance, drama, music and spoken word presentations that help foster human understanding, for the betterment of all mankind.
