What is Hate Crime?

A criminal offence committed against a person or property that is based upon the victim's race, national or ethnic origin, language, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or any other similar factor.

Hate Propogranda

Every one who advocates or promotes genocide towards any identifiable group, or every one who communicates statements in any public place that incites or wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group.

An identifiable group is any group distinguished by race, colour, religion or ethnic origin.

Remember

It is vital that a Hate Crime be reported to the Police.

If you are a victim or witness to a hate crime the following steps should be taken:

1. Notify police immediately
2. Preserve all relevant material
3. Record all information regarding the incident

The Toronto Police Service and the community have made a firm commitment to deal with hate crimes.

To help reduce and eliminate hate motivated crime within the City of Toronto the Hate Crime Section:

• acts as a resource and support to divisional hate crime officers;
• reviews all hate motivated crimes to identify trends and patterns within the community;
• maintains statistics on hate motivated crimes committed within the City of Toronto;
• co-ordinates the acquisition and maintenance of criminal intelligence on
• groups or individuals who espouse hate to determine if they represent a threat to the safety and security of the community;
• works with community groups to provide education and create strategies to increase public awareness about the nature and consequences of hate motivated crime;
• investigates, when appropriate, incidents of hate motivated crime.
